In Bahrain, overtime is the extra work employees perform besides their standard working hours. Typically, the regular working hours are 8 hours daily and overall 48 hours weekly. However, as governed by labor laws in Bahrain, employees are eligible for overtime pay and are granted stipulated rates. Employers often maintain overtime calculation in Bahrain by following Article 54 of the Bahrain labor laws. 

Employees are compensated at least 125% of their standard hourly rate up to 150% at night time. Also, Bahrain overtime law mandated an extra rate of overtime payment for working on weekdays. Depending on the day and timing, the amount and calculation of overtime in Bahrain can vary.

Employee overtime is the extra hours an employee performs beyond their general working hours. According to labor laws in Bahrain, the government has set 8 hours daily working time and 48 hours weekly. Any employee working more than this period is entitled to get overtime payment. This payment can not be waived by the employee himself.

However, Muslim workers’ working hours are usually reduced during Ramadan to 6 hours per day. During this period, workers are not allowed to work more than 2 hours of overtime. Any failure to provide the appropriate compensation can result in fines and penalties to employers. 

Though the overtime rule in Bahrain applies to most employees, it is exempted from some working categories. Based on Article 56 of the labor law guidelines, this applies to the following categories  –

  • Employer’s authorized agent like supervisor or manager

  • Working industry having irregular hours like cleaners and security guards

What Is The Overtime Rate In Bahrain?

Furthermore, Article 57 states different overtime rates for working overtime on weekends. Working on off days gives employees 150% of the regular hourly rate. If the employer does not want to pay for the overtime, he must give another day off for this. 

How To Calculate Overtime In Bahrain?

Overtime calculations in Bahrain are not so complex when you know the accurate compensation rates. All you need to do is to multiply the number of overtime hours by the hourly and overtime rates. Let’s check out the formula for Bahrain labor law overtime calculation – 

Overtime Pay = Number of overtime hours x Hourly rate x Overtime rate

Below is an example with a detailed calculation showing how is overtime calculated for workers in Bahrain.

Example 1

Mr. X works in a private firm and has a monthly salary of 4000 BHD. He works overtime for 3 hours on the day shift for 4 days in one month. The overtime does not include any weekends. 

As he works 3 hours of overtime for 4 days, he works in total – 

Overtime hours= 4 x 3 = 12 hours

 As the maximum weekly working hours are 48, the monthly working hours are,

Total monthly working hours = 48*4 = 192 hours

Next, the hourly rate must be found, as Mr X is paid monthly. 

Hourly rate = Monthly Salary / Total monthly working hours

         = 4000 / 192 

         = 20.83 BHD per hour

Lastly, 125% of the hourly overtime rate will apply to Mr X as he works the day shift without any weekends or off days.

Therefore, the formula now should be –

Overtime pay = (Overtime hours x Hourly rate) x Overtime rate 

= (12 x 20.83) x 125% 

= 312.45  BHD

So, by working 3 hours overtime for 4 days monthly, Mr X earns 312.45 BHD. 

How Is Overtime Calculated For Workers During Ramadan In Bahrain?

Overtime calculation for workers in Bahrain is not different during the month of Ramadan. Though the weekly working hours are decreased to 36 and the overtime limit to 2 hours, the compensation rates are kept equal.

Here is another example of Bahrain overtime calculation during Ramadan:

Example 2

The same Mr. X, who earns 4000 BHD monthly, works overtime 1.5 hours for 3 days in Ramadan. All the overtime is done in the day shift and on working days. 

The total number of overtime hours Mr X worked is – 

Overtime hours = 1.5 x 3 = 4.5 hours 

Now, though the monthly salary remains the same, the maximum required hours of Mr. X is now reduced to 36 hours weekly. So, the monthly working hours are,

Total monthly working hours = 36 * 4 = 144 hours

And the new hourly rate will be –

Hourly rate = Monthly Salary / Total monthly working hours

         = 4000 / 144

         = 27.78 BHD per hour

The overtime rate is the same as before, at 125%. 

Thus, the overtime pay of Mr. X in Ramadan is –

Overtime pay = (Overtime hours x Hourly rate) x Overtime rate

                           = (4.5 x 27.78) x 125% 

                           = 156.26 BHD

So, by working 1.5 hours overtime for 3 days monthly in Ramadan, Mr X earns 156.26 BHD.

How Do You Calculate Overtime In Excel?

Overtime Pay = Number of overtime hours x Hourly rate x Overtime rate
