Along with the employees, employers also contribute 11%-12% to the GOSI scheme. These contributions are calculated based on the contributory wage which refers to the salary reported to SIO. It includes base pay and eligible allowances and is used to determine both contributions and benefit payouts.

Who Is Eligible for Gosi?

The eligibility criteria for GOSI depend on nationality, employment status, and salary. 

  • The worker must be of Bahrain nationality.
  • The company must be registered with the GOSI scheme.
  • The employee must satisfy the provisions of social insurance law.
  • Self-employed workers must pay 200 to 2000 dinars per month to be eligible for GOSI.
  • Workers in specific government sectors, like administrators, civil and naval, are also eligible.

How Is GOSI Calculated In Bahrain?

Bahrain GOSI contribution is calculated by multiplying the percentage by the total salary. Here, the total wage means the sum of the basic salary with other allowances. Both the employee and employer’s contributions are added to find out the actual contributed amount. 

The formula for calculating the GOSI contribution is –

GOSI contribution =  Contribution Rate × GOSI-applicable salary

  • Employee’s share: percentage applied to their total salary
  • Employer’s share: percentage applied to the same total salary
  • Total contribution: sum of employee and employer portions

The GOSI-applicable salary is capped at BHD 4,000 per month. That means even if an employee earns more than this amount, contributions are only calculated on BHD 4,000.

As of 2025, for the private sector, 

  • Employee contribution: 8% of insurable salary
  • Employer contribution: 17% of insurable salary

Example of GOSI Calculation in Bahrain

Suppose an employee earns a salary of 2500 BHD in a private sector company in Bahrain. So, according to the GOSI contribution rate,

Employee contribution = 2,500 × 8% = BHD 200
Employer contribution = 2,500 × 17% = BHD 425
Total GOSI contribution = 200 + 425 = BHD 625

Now, if the employee earns more than 4000, for instance, BHD 5,000 (above the insurable ceiling), then the GOSI calculation in Bahrain will be, 

GOSI-applicable salary = 4,000 (cap)
Employee contribution = 4,000 × 8% = BHD 320
Employer contribution = 4,000 × 17% = BHD 680
Total contribution = 320 + 680 = BHD 1,000

As for the government sector,
Employer contribution: 20%
Combined with the employee share, the total contribution reaches 27%

If a government employee earns BHD 3,000, the total GOSI contribution in Bahrain will be, 

Employee contribution (7%) = 3,000 × 7% = BHD 210
Employer contribution (20%) = 3,000 × 20% = BHD 600
Total contribution = 210 + 600 = BHD 810

Non-GCC expatriates in Bahrain are not included in the full GOSI scheme. Instead, their contributions are limited to work injury coverage, 1% for employees and 3% for employers. 

For an expatriate earning BHD 2,500:

Employee contribution = 2,500 × 1% = BHD 25
Employer contribution = 2,500 × 3% = BHD 75
Total contribution = 25 + 75 = BHD 100

What Are the Current GOSI Contribution Rates in Bahrain?

As of 2025, the employer social insurance contribution for Bahraini nationals in the private sector is 17%, while employees contribute 8%. This increase is part of a phased schedule, with the employer’s rate rising 1% annually until reaching 21% by 2028.

Non-GCC expatriates contribute 4% of their salary, while GCC nationals continue to follow their home country’s social security system. All contributions are calculated on a salary ceiling of BHD 4,000 per month, and non-GCC employees remain eligible for end-of-service benefits.

The government increased its contribution by 2% starting July 2022, resulting in a total monthly employer contribution of 20%. Combined with the employee’s share, the total contribution reaches 27%.

How Does GOSI Deduction Work for Employees in Bahrain?

According to the Social Insurance Law of Bahrain (Article 22), GOSI is deducted before any other tax or fee deductions are incurred. As of the law applicable for 2024, this amount is 8% of the employee’s salary, while the employer contributes 16%. This amount is subtracted from the total salary without any exceptions.

Some companies also charge an extra 1.5% administrative fee besides GOSI deductions. Again, after working for more than 3 years, employees can reduce 0.5% of the GOSI contribution. 

This does not work for expats. In Bahrain, the GOSI calculation for expats is 4%. From this, 3% comes from the employer’s contribution and 1% from employees.

Employer vs. Employee Contribution Breakdown

As of the new rate declared by the government, the contribution rates of Bahrain took a new turn. Based on this social insurance law, employees are responsible for 8% of their salary. This amount will remain the same without any changes up to 2028.

On the other hand, the employer contribution was expected to increase by 1% each year from 2022 to 2028. In 2024, Bahrain’s GOSI contribution is 16% for the employers. 

This rate is fixed for expatriates at 3% of the employer contribution, while the employees contribute 1%. This is ensured to protect the rights and financial security of the local and expatriate workers.

What Is the Process for GOSI Registration and Compliance in Bahrain?

The process of GOSI registration requires a complete understanding of the local laws and proper attention. For this, the employer needs to register the company and the employees.

For the complete registration, follow the below steps.

Employer Registration: The employer must register his company to make its employees eligible for the GOSI scheme. The following documents must be kept ready for this. 

  • Employer commercial certificate 
  • Employer details like name, national ID, passport, etc.
  • Memorandum of Association or Articles of Association
  • Complete the eService form from the Social Insurance Organization website.

First, you have to activate eKey to access SIO e-services. Log in to SIO e-Services using your eKey credentials and fill and submit the registration form online. Now you can activate your account via email.

Employee Registration: After your company has been successfully registered, you need to ensure that every employee is registered, too. According to Bahrain Government law, you must submit the following four documents for this.

  • Bahrain national ID
  • Insurance protection extension form 
  • Salary details

What Are the GOSI Payment Requirements for Expats in Bahrain?

The payment terms for expatriate workers differ slightly from those of the local workers. According to the PwC tax summaries, it is required to contribute an overall 4% of their salary for social insurance. This amount covers just work injuries including work accidents, disability, and even death compensations.

The contribution of 4% combines both employer’s and employee’s parts. Among these, the employer is responsible for contributing 3% while the employee contributes only 1%. 

Thus, expatriates can not apply for the GOSI pension or health benefits scheme.

If an employer in Bahrain fails to pay SIO (GOSI) contributions, they may face a penalty of up to 20% of the unpaid amount plus 5% monthly interest. They may also be fined BHD 100–500, with double penalties for repeated violations.
